October 1 – Carter turns 95! Let’s Celebrate!

On October 1, 2017 a small but mighty group collected on the shores of the San Francisco Bay. A plane was creating a heart in the sky in tribute to the final day of the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love celebrations. That day also marked President Jimmy Carter’s 93rd birthday and we were there to celebrate and launch the first “Jimmy Carter Jamboree” week with a line up of grassroots events of music, talks and public access television broadcasting, including the screening of the Swiss made film, A Road Not Taken at the Showcase Theater with the Swiss filmmakers who flew in for the events.

Carter has been called by historians the last president of the 60s era, one who lived by the ethos of what the people stood for and were willing to create in what some called the Age of Aquarius  – unity, kindness and generosity, along with iconic music that continues to play today. Imagine was one . . . a song that allows to dream big and be inspired. “Imagine all the people living in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.”

This year, 2019, President Jimmy Carter turns 95 years old, the oldest living president who has worked his entire life demonstrating to all of us how to live a humble but meaningful life. He was visionary and was thrown under the proverbial bus during his administration. Hindsight is 20/20 vision and we have the opportunity NOW to thank him and demonstrate not just to Carter but to all politicians who represent American interests to conduct business with honesty, integrity and vision, how we will celebrate them. Let’s show the light of what we want and light a candle, and in this case, 95 of them.

The Beat of Musicians. . . and Our Own Hearts

Let’s get inspired for an international celebration for President Jimmy Carter’s 95th Birthday
October 1, 2019.

Let’s show our political leaders how we honor our honest, generous and peaceful leaders.

Perhaps it was in an interview I heard with the Brazilian Queen of Jazz, Flora Purim, who said it first – “we are all musicians. In the beginning of life we start with a beat, our own heart beat. Then we gain our voices. We are all musicians.”

We got a start these past two years celebrating Carter in Marin County where those who still have beating hearts came together, defying all logic, to highlight the former American president who is considered the Rock’n Roll President, one who had vision and has demonstrated compassion and worked toward peace all his life. The Town of Fairfax even issued an official proclamation.

SamariaWolf

I got to know Musicians Steve Wolf and Mason Holcomb at a little cafe in Fairfax, one of our last great hippy towns in Marin County. I listened to their words and it was like I heard  the last threads of what some could call a passionate calling for humanity which we could use to stitch ourselves back together. Their band SamaraiWolf could put that howl back into our own voices and really get our hearts thumping again.

The Dream Farmers

Randall Sequeria and The Dream Farmers came a long distance to play for a humble crowd. “I’ve lived a good life and need to give.” I heard Randall Sequeira say. They played their hearts out as they do for many human rights and social justice events, reminding us what’s important and what we all should be dancing to.

So, there’s this idea in this point in time when our country and planet are about to fall apart –  invest in our musicians, our artists, those who remind us of our humanity, those who help get us dancing and connected in “real time,” in close connection, where we can  remind ourselves what life is and should be about. And be mindful that we are all artists who can craft our future, listening to  our beating hearts and our voices, if we allow ourselves to do the job.

Now is the time to move to the age of “Human Investment” instead of Stock Market/gadget gambling – to put our trust and conviction into helping other humans. Let’s help each other rise to each other’s dreams, their music, their art . . . and enter the Age of Art and Humanism at a time we need it most.

And there’s this – we ALL benefit from this type of investment when we get to be reminded of our own heartbeats and the power of our voices.

SAVE THE DATE – OCTOBER 1, 2019 – LET’S SCREAM IT AND CELEBRATE PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER – THE VISIONARY, THE FATHER OF THE SOLAR AGE AND THE ROCK’N ROLL PRESIDENT.

Did you know . . .  Jimmy spoke Spanish and gave all his speeches in Latin America in Spanish as a sign of respect? Well, if you didn’t know before, now you do!

Here’s a speech Carter gave in Cuba! Check it out! Yes, in Spanish with a southern twang! And who was in the audience? We’ll let you figure that one out yourself. Carter is a true diplomat.

Carter – The Environmentalist

The beautiful and exciting part of being a Carter fan is that once you begin to look, you discover secrets or little known facts about this living legacy that our schools have failed to teach us and the media fails to report on.

But, lucky you! You’ve got ME to report all the findings! And that is my mission until our country recognizes our national treasure of President Jimmy Carter on a level we need to recognize this great leader.

Yesterday I was roaming the beautiful public library of Mill Valley when I flipped through a large Ansel Adams wilderness photography book. As a photographer and nature, I can always enjoy his gorgeous work. And guess what I discovered?

In the forward section of the book there was a photograph of Ansel Adams and President Jimmy Carter with First Lady Roselyn. . . surprised, I had to read and discover that not only were they friends and Adams took many photos of President Jimmy Carter, aside from his wilderness work, but that Carter has been an enormous friend to the wilderness mission.

I looked this up when I got home. And sure enough, ready on. Time to recognize the power of an amazing visionary and conservationist whose time has come. Carter has provided us a baseline of honesty and good values that we can look for again in our next political leader:

by Ansel Adams

“In January of 1978, President Jimmy Carter designated 15 new national monuments in Alaska, acting where Congress would not. This action was credited with helping wilderness opponents realize the need for compromise on public lands legislation, and proves a pointed lesson for a modern climate of political discord.

Carter wasn’t done yet; the next month, the president signed into law the Endangered American Wilderness Act, which then represented the largest single addition to our National Wilderness Preservation System since 1964. In 1980, just before leaving office, Carter signed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act into law, protecting over 100 million acres of Alaskan land in one fell swoop. Even since his stint as president, Carter has continued to be an outspoken advocate for wilderness, especially the “last frontier” of Alaska.” – Wilderness Society.

And more!

Time to honor Carter! And, yes, this photo was done by our great Ansel Adams!

Thank you, President Jimmy Carter

Last year Marin County launched the inaugural “Jimmy Carter Jamboree” to honor a living president who has demonstrated the power of kindness, generosity and honesty. The idea was to stir up grassroots parties and honor Carter with music tributes, videos and city/county wide proclamations.

Steve Wolf and Mason Holcomb kept it real by tributing their Saturday morning gig at a local cafe to President Jimmy Carter and added a level of connection to our age in their song “We Are Connected.”

Kate Sears of the Marin County Board of Supervisors provided an official proclamation.

Congressman Jared Huffman provided a powerful tribute to Carter with inspirational words.

We made a start and it was amazing because NO political leader in the past 39 years wanted to give a public tribute to President Jimmy Carter.

Swiss filmmaker Christina Hemauer and Roman Kellor flew from Switzerland to join Michael Stocker of Ocean Conservation Research to discuss Carter and the 1970s environmental/energy policies, the decade we missed the opportunity to put our planet back together again.

Screen Shot 2018-09-01 at 11.07.15 AM

And, yet, why does President Jimmy Carter not receive the proper respect and recognition from the American media and citizens, even today’s environmental leaders? Perhaps it’s time to have humility, understanding that we missed the greatest opportunity in this country to take on global climate change and be the leaders of peace.

October 1, 2017 marked Carter’s 93rd birthday and he was the 39th president of our country. There is a representation of a numerical mirror, a symbolic reflection that very much underscores the time we are in – a reflection of his administration and the shadowy untruths and values that we have been living with politically, socially and spiritually for the last 37 years.

October 1, 2017 also marks the same day that San Francisco celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love, a time when people were experiencing deep introspection, questioning authority and the establishment, a time that is upon us again. Fifty years, is a midpoint, another symbol for us to use to contemplate a direction we wish to choose.

Carter is known by historians as the “last president of the 60’s era,” and one whose speech The Crisis of Confidence of 1979 screams louder to us today, when it was criticized then.

The Carter Center recently   hosted  a powerful Human Rights Defenders Forum from July 21-24, 2018 (it’s available as a webcast). I listened to Carter’s talk yesterday and was humbled by his intellectual depth. And more than that I was reminded by the level of his integrity and deep sense of what is right and wrong in the world, from the position of women’s rights, immigration issues, racism and more. I was heartened to hear that some call him “the rock’n roll president” given that some of his best friends are musicians, such as Peter Gabriel and the Nobel Peace Prize recipient Bob Dylan who had refused  the Musicares Award in Los Angeles twice until President Jimmy Carter agreed to present it to him.

With all this said, we in Marin County are looking to honor President Jimmy Carter again October 2018. If you are interested in collaborating, please contact me, Barbara McVeigh, and let’s rock’n roll with party and blast it to the world to honor a living American leader who has demonstrated kindness, generosity and honesty on the highest level.

We know the strength of America. We are strong. We can regain our unity. We can regain our confidence. We are the heirs of generations who survived threats much more powerful and awesome than those that challenge us now. Our fathers and mothers were strong men and women who shaped a new society during the Great Depression, who fought world wars, and who carved out a new charter of peace for the world. – Jimmy Carter, 1979
